Windows 7 Will Lead Microoft Operating

windows 7

Analysts at Gartner have forecast that Microsoft’s Windows 7 operating system (OS) is going to be running on 42 per cent of in use PCs by the end of the year.

According to Gartner, the means the end of Windows XP dominance and is a result of improvements to IT budgets this year and last. It has also helped that 94 per cent of new PCs are being shipped with Windows 7 this year.

Annette Jump, research director at Gartner has reported, “By the end of 2011, nearly 635 million new PCs around the globe are being expected to be shipped with Windows 7. Many organisations have been planning their deployment of Windows 7 for the last 12 to 18 months, and are now moving rapidly to Windows 7.”

However, Windows isn’t the only operating system to see higher take-up. Mac OS X saw an increase of 0.7 per cent in shipments between 2008 and 2010 and Gartner predicts it will grow to 4.5 per cent of PCs by the end of this year and on to 5.2 per cent by 2015.

Gartner further added, “Shipments will grow stronger in mature markets where consumers are buying into the Apple product ecosystem.”

The forecast predicts that Windows 7 will be the last of Microsoft’s operating systems to be deployed through “big corporate migration”. Gartner believes that organisations will turn to “alternative client computing architectures” and opt for virtualisation and cloud solutions over the next five years.

Because of the barrier of application migration from Windows, Gartner expects Linux to remain a niche OS with a market share of less than two per cent. As for other OS options such as WebOS, Android and Chrome OS, well, Gartner doesn’t think they will gain any significant PC market share.

India Set To Roll Out First Lot Of Low-Cost Computing Device

india

The government of India is set to roll out the first lot of its low-cost computing device. Nearly 10,000 devices are going to be dispatched to the IIT-Rajasthan after end of this month. And over the next four months, 90,000 more devices are going to be released nationwide. And the device will cost Rs 2,200 of which Centre will subsidize 50 per cent of the cost. The government plans to keep the prices of the gadget, meant for the students, at around Rs 1,000.

Commenting on the delay in rolling out of the devices, officials have explained that the company that has been given the contract to manufacture one lakh pieces was bought over. However, they further add that they have worked the contract with the new manufacturer and further delay is very much unlikely.

The revolutionary gadget has a 7-inch touchscreen display, two USB ports and an external hard drive. The device also has a three-hour battery life. Moreover, it has Word, Excel, power point, PDF viewer, Open office, zip/unzip facility, video streaming, flash video, web browser with javascript support and many more software applications. According to officials, the device can be operated in extreme conditions as well.

The device, which has been unveiled by the Indian government last year, has received sensational response from the tech world then. The government hopes that the device spreads the reach of technology to the remote areas of the country. In spite of apprehensions about the success of the device, the government appears firm on the plan. Considering the vast population that has nearly no access to the modern education, the low-cost device is certainly going to push the ongoing internet revolution in the country.

India has managed some similar pricing miracles in the automobiles industry. Nano, launched by Tata, has already proved to be a huge hit in India, as its prices have been kept within the reach of the Indian middle class. In India, you can easily get a decent mobile phone with basic features for nearly Rs1000-2000. The growing market competition and companies aiming to exploit the purchasing power of the large Indian middle class, it is very likely that we see several more low-cost hi-tech products in near future.
