Study – 2G Mobile Phones Better Than Smartphones In Rural Areas

2g mobiles

According to a new study, the people, who are living in rural areas, have to stop using 3G smartphones and instead switch to older 2G versions which are better in making calls from rural areas.

Communication regulator Ofcom’s study has revealed that the feature phones fared better in making, starting and completing calls from rural areas as they allowed more internal space for aerials. ”

“In the more rural areas that the phones have  tested, the feature or entry level phones generally returned somewhat better performance than smartphones for call completion and call setup “, the Telegraph quoted the study, as saying.

The study has further revealed, ”This may be due to the reduced complexity of antenna on these devices and 2G phones not having issues in switching between 2G and 3G networks “.

However both types of phones reported similar sound quality.

Ofcom’s study has also tried to assess whether mobile consumers have well been informed about mobile network coverage.

It has found that though individual phone companies have provided valuable network maps, just three out of every ten consumers consulted them. The study has also found mobile service providers are making progress in addressing poor network coverage both in rural areas and in buildings.

HP TouchPad Set To Launch July 1

It has been a long time coming, but finally Hewlett-Packard (HP) looks as though it may be ready to unleash its TouchPad tablet upon the world. With the likes of Apple, Samsung and Motorola already battling hard within the tablet arena, HP is hoping that the recently announced July 1 launch of the TouchPad will see it hit the ground running.

Powered by webOS 3.0, the Wi-Fi-enabled TouchPad is going to be available in 16GB and 32GB variants, which come with respective price tags of $499.99 USD and $599.99 USD. 3G or 4G models are expected later in the year—although HP hasn’t confirmed which network its deal with AT&T favours.

“What makes HP TouchPad a compelling alternative to competing products is webOS,” enthused HP’s Jon Rubenstein in an official statement.“The platform’s unmatched features and flexibility will continue to differentiate HP products from the rest of the market for both personal and professional use,” he added. “This is only the beginning of what HP’s scale can do with webOS.”

Canadian consumers should have access come mid-July, with those in Australia, Hong Kong, Italy, New Zealand, Singapore and Spain likely to receive it before the close of 2011.

Facebook Hid Video Chat Feature In New iPhone App

Primary thing is that there was the secret iPad app, which is being hidden within the official Facebook iPhone app and now there’s a video chat feature inside the new Facebook Messenger app.

When will the social network learn to stop hiding things?

It has barely been hours after the Facebook Messenger app has launched that the folks at 9 to 5 Mac discovered that it contains a video chat feature or at least some of the components required for video conferencing.

Apparently both the iPhone and Android versions of Facebook Messenger have “very rudimentary” code which references some sort of video calling. Unlike the hidden iPad app though, this feature can’t be activated or used just yet.

It is being speculated that the mobile video chat service would be linked to the Skype-powered video chat feature built into the Facebook website, but there is no official word from Facebook regarding any plans for such a mobile app addition at this point.

Windows 7 Will Lead Microoft Operating

windows 7

Analysts at Gartner have forecast that Microsoft’s Windows 7 operating system (OS) is going to be running on 42 per cent of in use PCs by the end of the year.

According to Gartner, the means the end of Windows XP dominance and is a result of improvements to IT budgets this year and last. It has also helped that 94 per cent of new PCs are being shipped with Windows 7 this year.

Annette Jump, research director at Gartner has reported, “By the end of 2011, nearly 635 million new PCs around the globe are being expected to be shipped with Windows 7. Many organisations have been planning their deployment of Windows 7 for the last 12 to 18 months, and are now moving rapidly to Windows 7.”

However, Windows isn’t the only operating system to see higher take-up. Mac OS X saw an increase of 0.7 per cent in shipments between 2008 and 2010 and Gartner predicts it will grow to 4.5 per cent of PCs by the end of this year and on to 5.2 per cent by 2015.

Gartner further added, “Shipments will grow stronger in mature markets where consumers are buying into the Apple product ecosystem.”

The forecast predicts that Windows 7 will be the last of Microsoft’s operating systems to be deployed through “big corporate migration”. Gartner believes that organisations will turn to “alternative client computing architectures” and opt for virtualisation and cloud solutions over the next five years.

Because of the barrier of application migration from Windows, Gartner expects Linux to remain a niche OS with a market share of less than two per cent. As for other OS options such as WebOS, Android and Chrome OS, well, Gartner doesn’t think they will gain any significant PC market share.

Launch Of HTC Radar – Windows Mango Smartphone In India For Rs 23,990

htv radar

Coinciding the launch of Windows Phone 7.5, today HTC and Microsoft India has today announced the launch of first Windows  7.5 Mango smartphone, HTC Radar in Indian market for Rs. 23990 (MRP Rs. 25490).

The Radar is featured as follows:

  • A 3.8-inch WVGA (480X800 pixels) SLCD display.
  • A 1GHz Qualcomm processor.
  • 512MB RAM.
  • Comes with 8GB of internal storage (6.54GB available) but has no microSD card slot.
  • Its 5.0 MP rear camera can shoot videos in 720p resolution while the VGA front camera is good enough just for the occasional video call.
  • It features HTC’s unibody design, which feels super sturdy and premium.
  • Its 1520 mAh non-removable battery is claimed to provide up to 10 hours of talktime on GSM and up to 8 hours on 3G.
  • A committed camera button rounds off the feature list here as users can now click away even when the phone is locked.

Unlike Android, where there is a noticeable difference between 1GHz processor/512MB RAM and a 1GHz processor/1GB RAM configurations, we could not see any lag/sluggishness with the Radar. That’s probably got to do with the Windows Phone 7.5 platform.

Unlike the Samsung Omnia W, which feels plasticky, HTC has done a remarkable job with the hardware build and quality. Well, that’s all we have for the moment, till our review which should be up in the coming days.

The HTC Radar truck-loaded with exciting features experiences such as search, Gaming, Email and social networks across Bing, Office, Xbox LIVE, Facebook, Twitter and more. The device completely integrated Microsoft Exchange and calendar alongside the Microsoft Office Hub are among the various niceties users can expect. Users can also navigate the web efficiently thanks to Internet Explorer 9.

The device is equipped with G-sensor, proximity sensor, and ambient light sensor as well. While as connectivity option, it has Bluetooth, WiFi, 3G HSPA ( 14.4 Mbps download speed) and GPRS/EDGE options.
